Should I Choose a Day Camp or Sleepaway Camp for My Child?

Choosing a summer camp for your child can come with plenty of questions. Are they ready for sleepaway camp, or would they be more comfortable coming home each afternoon? Which experience will give them the opportunity to build confidence, independence, friendships, and new skills?

There isn’t one right answer. The best choice depends on your child’s age, personality, interests, comfort level, and what works best for your family. Research from the American Camp Association has found positive youth-development outcomes across both day and overnight camp experiences, including growth in confidence, friendships, independence, and leadership.

What Does Day Camp Offer?

Day camp gives children a full day of camp activities and friendships while allowing them to return home each afternoon. For many children, it’s a great way to experience camp, especially if they’re not quite ready to spend nights away from home.

At Oasis Day Camp, campers spend their days trying new activities, making friends, swimming, playing sports, creating art, exploring STEM, enjoying outdoor activities, and participating in weekly events and theme days. Oasis also builds Choice Time into the schedule, giving campers the opportunity to choose activities that interest them and try something new. Oasis programming age appropriate and is intentionally designed around pillars of Self, Others and the World with daily outcomes connecting these.

At Oasis, campers have all the values, traditions and mission of sleepaway camp, in a day camp format. Day camp isn’t a smaller version of overnight camp. It can be a full summer experience where children become part of a camp community, gain confidence, and practice independence while still having the comfort of home at the end of the day.

What Does Sleepaway Camp Offer?

Sleepaway camp gives children the opportunity to live at camp for a set period of time. Along with the activities and friendships that come with camp, children have more opportunities to manage daily routines, make choices, and navigate new experiences while supported by counselors and staff.

That doesn’t mean children need sleepaway camp to become independent. Day camp offers plenty of opportunities to try new things, make decisions, build friendships, and grow more confident.

Is Your Child Ready for Sleepaway Camp?

Instead of focusing only on age, think about your individual child:

  • Have they spent nights away from home before (sleepovers, family stays)?
  • How do they typically handle new environments?
  • Are they excited about the idea of sleepaway camp, or hesitant?
  • Are they comfortable managing everyday routines — dressing, hygiene, belongings — on their own?

Some children may be ready for overnight camp right away, while others may feel more comfortable starting with day camp and considering sleepaway camp later. Neither path is better. It’s about finding an experience that feels like the right fit for your child right now.

Consider What Works for Your Family

Your child’s personality is only part of the decision. Think about your family’s summer schedule, the length of the camp session, your child’s interests, and what type of daily experience you want for them.

It’s also worth looking beyond the words day camp or sleepaway camp and asking what the camp itself offers. What activities will your child experience? What does a typical day look like? How are campers supported? How does the camp communicate with families?

At Oasis, our goal is to give children a summer filled with opportunities to explore, connect, and grow in a supportive camp community. Our preschool Early Start Imagination Camp is for 3-5 year olds not yet in Kindergarten (each age has it’s own group) , Lower Camp serves campers entering 1st and 2nd grade, while Upper Camp is designed for campers entering 3rd through 6th grade, with age-appropriate activities and opportunities to discover new interests throughout the summer.Oasis also offers Travel Camps for children entering 5th – 10th grade.

So, Which Camp Is Right for Your Child?

For some children, day camp is the perfect place to start. They get a full day of activities, friendships, and adventure while still returning home each afternoon. For others, sleepaway camp may be the next exciting step toward a more independent experience.

There is no need to rush the decision. The right summer camp is one where your child can feel supported, have fun, try something new, and grow a little more confident along the way.
